Cherry Hood Workshop (part one)

This last weekend I participated in an intensive portraiture workshop with Australian Archibald prize winner Cherry Hood. An amazing artist I have admired for a very long time, it was a true honour to watch her work and receive artistic guidance from her at her fantastic studio in NSW.

Over the two day period I created two portraits in her style, working with very watery drippy paints on a far larger scale than I have ever painted. For my subjects I chose my own photographs of two sisters - thus further challenging myself to not only paint a good picture, but achieve a likeness as well. 

It was a highly enjoyable experience, and I can't wait to paint in this scale using my own approach and subjects. Seeing her huge studio has made it imperative for me to find my own place in which I can throw some paint around.

November Auction

It's that time again! The Femme Thou Art Collective is hosting it's monthly original art auction again, where you have a week-long chance at bidding on some gorgeous artworks by a small group of talented female artists. Each month a given theme is reflected upon by the group in their own style - this month it was birthstone's, and the resulting artworks will be compiled into a 2014 calendar available to purchase later.

I was paired with June - Pearl. I was instantly inspired by recollections of swimming in the sea and snorkelling trips to the Great Barrier Reef and Turkey, as well as the beautiful natural South Sea pearls I used to admire at Victoria Buckley Jewellery.

Through the London Graphics Centre "Shop Art" exhibition, my painting "For you were made from Dust" is available to pre-order for a strictly limited time only as a large-format poster-sized A1 print.

You can order your print NOW until the end of JUNE 2013. After this time Pre-Orders will CLOSE and no-more A1 prints will be offered again. This is a very rare opportunity to own one of my artworks printed on this scale - it will not be offered again. A walk in the woods

Every morning I venture into the woods nearby. 

On less asthmatic days I run to stay fit and keep my lungs trained, on more asthmatic days (most days) I go for a long walk. On days when my mind is turbulent, the woods infuse me with calm and tranquility, and always fill me with wonder and inspiration.Sometimes I spot shy deer, sometimes a sly fox with his typical loping gait. Today I was surrounded by tiny brilliant blue butterflies that seemed to hover around me as I ran.

The woods have always been a great source of wonder for me - it isn't a mistake this blog is titled what it is!

The photograph of the full work is not the best. I can't wait to get nice scans / photographs of ALL my work once I return to Australia. I hate looking sloppy and un-professional!

Fragile Glimpse

Tomorrow I take all my work to the Eszterház Palace in Győr to begin curating my Solo Exhibition. It's still a month away but I might be heading to Paris for a few weeks (insert incredible excitement) so we're trying to get as much preparation done this week as possible. Hopefully in a few days I can reveal the finished invite/flier!

Another milk-eyed seer. I’ve barely finalized the title for my upcoming Solo Show revolving around Hungarian folktales, but I’m already contemplating a title for this next body of work, to avoid always calling it “my new series”, or something else vaguely similar.

Here taped to the wall are my brainstormed ideas… I've managed to narrow it down to the closest 50...

Here is the next sketch, with the drawing finished she patiently awaits painting...

Ghost

I’ve been testing combining my detailed watercolour portraits with elements of collage and mixed media. My first experiment with this technique was BriarRose, and I liked the result enough to try a few more variations. I haven’t yet shared them here, as they are mostly works in progress. I finished the first small ghost though, so I can show her to you!
